How to Tell if Your Address Is Odd or Even

Look at the last digit of your house number:

  • Odd: ends in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 (e.g., 123 Main St β†’ odd β†’ Tue/Thu/Sat)
  • Even: ends in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 (e.g., 456 Oak Ave β†’ even β†’ Wed/Fri/Sun)

How to Keep Your Lawn Green on 3 Days Per Week

Three watering days with 15-minute station limits sounds challenging, but it's enough for a healthy lawn if your system is efficient. Here's how to maximize every drop:

Water in Cycles, Not One Long Run

Instead of running each station for 15 continuous minutes, try three 5-minute cycles with 30-minute breaks between them. This allows Central Valley clay soil to absorb water between cycles instead of creating runoff. Most smart controllers have a "cycle and soak" feature built in.

Water Early β€” 4 AM to 8 AM

Early morning watering minimizes evaporation from wind and sun. Evening watering leaves grass wet overnight and invites fungal disease. The 4–6 AM window is ideal.

Fix Your Sprinklers

A single broken head wastes hundreds of gallons per month without helping your lawn. Walk your yard while sprinklers are running and look for:

  • Heads that aren't popping up fully
  • Misting (too much pressure β€” wastes water to evaporation)
  • Spray hitting the sidewalk or driveway instead of grass
  • Dry spots indicating coverage gaps

Our sprinkler repair service optimizes your system for maximum coverage within the watering restrictions.

Choose the Right Grass

  • Bermuda grass needs 1–1.5 inches of water per week β€” achievable on the 3-day schedule
  • Tall fescue needs 1.5–2+ inches per week β€” tight on 3 days, especially in July–August peak heat
  • Drought-tolerant alternatives (Kurapia, UC Verde Buffalo Grass) need even less

See our Bermuda vs. fescue comparison for a detailed breakdown.

Consider Smart Controllers

Smart irrigation controllers (Rachio, Hunter Hydrawise, B-hyve) automatically adjust watering based on weather conditions. They skip watering after rain, extend cycles during heat waves (within your allowed days), and ensure you never water during restricted hours. They pay for themselves in water savings within 1–2 years.

Mulch Saves Water

A 2–4 inch layer of mulch around trees, shrubs, and in planting beds reduces evaporation by up to 70% and keeps soil cooler. This frees up more of your limited watering time for lawn areas.

What About New Lawns?

If you're installing new sod or overseeding, new lawn establishment typically qualifies for a temporary watering exemption. Contact your city's water utility to request the exemption before installation:

  • Fresno: FresGO app or call 311
  • Kerman: (559) 550-0832
  • Clovis: (559) 324-2600

New sod needs heavy watering for the first 2–3 weeks to establish roots. Without the exemption, you'd be limited to 3 days β€” not enough for new sod in summer.

Tired of fighting watering restrictions? Fresno offers $1.00 per square foot (up to $1,500) for replacing lawn with drought-tolerant landscaping. Read our full rebate guide for step-by-step instructions on how to qualify.
