Drought-tolerant landscaping in the Central Valley does not mean a yard full of gravel and cactus. With the right plants and design, a water-smart yard is lush, colorful, and beautiful year-round β while using far less water than a lawn. Here's what works in Fresno, Kerman, and Clovis.
What is xeriscaping?
Xeriscaping (from the Greek xeros, "dry") is landscaping designed to minimize water use. In a place where summers top 100Β°F and watering is capped at 3 days a week, it's the smartest way to love your yard without fighting the climate. A good xeriscape combines:
- Drought-adapted plants grouped by water need (hydrozoning)
- Mulch to hold soil moisture and block weeds
- Drip irrigation for beds (not spray heads)
- Permeable hardscape for paths and patios
- Minimal lawn β kept only where you actually use it
Best drought-tolerant plants (and they look good)
These thrive in Fresno County's USDA Zone 9 heat and alkaline soil.
California natives
California Poppy
Bright orange, self-seeding, zero supplemental water once established. Stunning in mass plantings.
Manzanita
Evergreen with beautiful red bark. Extremely drought-tolerant. Varieties from ground cover to 6+ ft.
Western Redbud
Small tree (15β20 ft) with spectacular pink-purple spring blooms. Deciduous and heat-loving.
Deergrass
Graceful native ornamental grass. Low maintenance, great as a border or accent.
California Buckwheat
Clusters of white-to-pink flowers, drought-proof, and a magnet for pollinators.
Purple Needlegrass
California's state grass. Low-water and perfect for a meadow-style planting.
Mediterranean-climate plants
Same hot-dry-summer, mild-winter climate as ours β a natural fit.
Lavender
Fragrant purple flowers that love heat and alkaline soil. One of the best picks for our valley.
Rosemary
Evergreen and drought-proof. Works as ground cover, hedge, or shrub β with a culinary bonus.
Salvia (sage)
Showy purple, red, and pink blooms that bring in hummingbirds. Many varieties to choose from.
Agave
Dramatic sculptural form, zero maintenance once planted. Dozens of sizes and shapes.
Bougainvillea
Vivid color in hot, sunny spots. Needs very little water once it's established.
Low-water ground covers (lawn alternatives)
Kurapia
The leading lawn alternative in California. Low-growing, stays green, can go unmowed, loves the heat.
Dymondia
Silver-green carpet that tolerates light foot traffic on very little water.
Creeping Thyme
Fragrant underfoot, purple flowers, handles moderate traffic.
UC Verde Buffalo Grass
Bred at UC Riverside, grown in Fresno. Twice-weekly watering β closest thing to a lawn at half the water.
Design ideas that actually look great
The "hybrid yard"
The most practical for families β keep a small lawn where kids play, xeriscape the rest.
- ~500 sq ft Bermuda play area in back
- Mulch & plant beds along fences
- DG path from patio to gate
- Native front yard on drip
The "no-lawn" front yard
More curb appeal than grass ever had.
- Flagstone or paver walkway
- Lavender & rosemary borders
- Manzanita & Redbud focal points
- DG and river rock + accent lighting
The "edible" landscape
Beauty plus a harvest.
- Citrus (moderate water)
- Pomegranate (very drought-tolerant)
- Fig trees (love our heat)
- Rosemary, sage & thyme borders
What does it cost?
| Project type | Estimated cost (per 1,000 sq ft) |
|---|---|
| Basic mulch and rock conversion | $1,500β$3,000 |
| Native plant garden with drip irrigation | $3,000β$5,000 |
| Full designed landscape with hardscape | $5,000β$10,000 |
| Premium design with pavers, lighting, focal trees | $8,000β$15,000+ |
Fresno pays $1.00/sq ft, up to $1,500, to replace lawn with drought-tolerant landscaping. Combined with $150β$400/year in lower water bills β plus no mowing, fertilizing, or pest control β the payback adds up fast. Read our full rebate guide.
5 mistakes to avoid
Skipping soil prep β even tough plants need drainage; our clay needs loosening and compost first.
Overwatering new plants β they need regular water year one, then very little; overwatering kills more than drought.
Ignoring hydrozones β don't share one drip line between a lavender and a citrus tree.
All rock, no plants β pure gravel reflects heat and has zero curb appeal. Mix materials.
No mulch β 2β4 inches of mulch conserves moisture and builds soil over time.
